Dental bleaching, also known as tooth whitening, is a common procedure in general dentistry but most especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

Teeth can become stained by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs and tobacco. Certain antibiotic medications (like tetracycline) can also cause teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel.

There are mainly two options to whiten one's teeth: in-office bleaching, which is applied by the dentist and at-home bleaching, which is to be used at home by the patient.

In the in-office technique, the bleaching agent is either carbamide peroxide, which breaks down in the mouth to form hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide itself.

The procedure usually takes 2-3 appointments.

For bleaching at home, the patient uses custom made splints of the teeth to be treated, produced by the dental laboratory, and a low concentration carbamide peroxide gel. Results can vary, depending on which application is chosen, with some people achieving whiter teeth in a few days, and others seeing very little results or no results at all.

Bleaching is ineffective on tooth-color fillings and fixed prosthesis (crown or bridge).

The main side-effect of bleaching, although reversible, is tooth sensitivity in cold stimuli which can be resolved with the use of desensitizing agents.

Dental composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings, are types of synthetic resins which are used in dentistry as restorative materials.

Composites can be made in a wide range of tooth colors allowing near invisible restoration.

Direct dental composites are placed by the dentist in a clinical setting. Polymerization is accomplished typically with a hand held curing light. Indirect composites are cured outside the mouth, in the laboratory.

They are mainly used for fabricating indirect inlays and onlays.

A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface.

There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer, composite and dental porcelain.

A composite veneer is directly placed (built-up in the mouth). In contrast, a porcelain veneer is indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, and later bonded to the tooth. A dentist may use one veneer to restore a single tooth that may have been fractured or discolored, or multiple teeth to create a "Hollywood" type of makeover.

Many people have small teeth resulting in spaces that may not be easily closed by orthodontics. Some people have worn away the edges of their teeth resulting in a prematurely aged appearance, while others may have malpositioned teeth that appear crooked.

Multiple veneers can close these spaces, lengthen teeth that have been shortened by wear, provide a uniform color, shape, and symmetry, and make the teeth appear straight.

Porcelain veneers are in the forefront of modern cosmetic dentistry.
